Chesongoch, Elgeyo Marakwet — A heavy silence and deep grief filled the air on 21 November 2025 as the community of Chesongoch gathered for a mass funeral in memory of the 31 people who lost their lives in a devastating landslide
Community in Mourning
Families, friends, and local leaders converged at St. Benedict Christ the King Catholic Church in Kerio Valley for a solemn requiem mass. Coffins draped in flowers were lined side by side — each representing a life tragically cut short. Mourners held framed photos of their loved ones, while emotional hymns echoed through the valley as people sought comfort in their shared grief.Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen led the government delegation, pledging continued support to the bereaved families. Some expressed pleas not just for condolence, but action: they called for resettlement to safer areas and long-term protection for people living on high-risk slopes.
The Disaster That Shook Chesongoch
On the night of 31 October 2025, after days of relentless rain, mud and boulders surged down the escarpment, devastating several villages. Homes were washed away, farmlands destroyed, and dozens of families were left in limbo. The death toll has risen over time; reports now confirm at least 36 people have died, with many more still unaccounted for. Rescue teams — including those from the Red Cross, military, and county agencies — deployed sniffer dogs, drones, and helicopters in the difficult terrain to locate survivors and recover bodies.
