Mbooni, Makueni County — A tragic road accident in Makueni County has claimed six lives — among them four KCSE students — in a collision involving a speeding lorry and a stationary 14-seater matatu at Ngoluni Stage, Mbooni East Sub-County.
What Happened
On the evening of Friday, November 21, 2025, a lorry reportedly carrying construction materials veered off the road on the Itangini–Tawa highway and crashed into a matatu that was stopped at Ngoluni Stage. According to Mbooni East Sub-County Police Commander Ibrahim Karani, the lorry struck the matatu from behind while passengers were boarding.
Casualties & Injuries
Six people died on the spot. Among the deceased were four KCSE candidates, who had just completed their national exams and were returning home. Eleven others were injured in the crash and were taken to Makueni County Referral Hospital.
Eyewitness Testimony & Road Conditions
Witnesses say the lorry was speeding and “lost control” just before it veered off the road. Some reports indicate that the stretch of road where the accident occurred had recently been tarmacked, and the lorry may have struggled to navigate it safely.
Aftermath
The driver of the lorry fled the scene immediately after the crash. Police have launched a manhunt to locate him. The bodies of the deceased were taken to Tawa Mortuary.
Makueni health officials say they have stabilized most of the injured, many of whom sustained head injuries, fractures, and soft tissue wounds.
Community Reaction
Members of the community are deeply shaken, especially because the victims include young students. One family is reportedly mourning four relatives — a mother and three children — who died while picking up a KCSE candidate. Politicians and local leaders have urged stricter enforcement of road safety, particularly for heavy vehicles on rural roads.
Call for Accountability
With the lorry driver still on the run, many are calling for swift justice for the victims and their families. Community advocates are also demanding tougher regulations to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
