A fresh political storm is brewing in the Mt Kenya region as a section of leaders has called on Democratic Coalition Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua to respect and recognise Deputy Prime Minister Prof. Kithure Kindiki as the region’s political leader.
The leaders, speaking during public engagements across Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi, insisted that Kindiki has demonstrated strategic leadership, national influence, and a unifying approach that reflects the region’s political direction.
Growing Rift in the Region
The renewed calls highlight intensifying supremacy battles between the two political heavyweights. While Gachagua has long positioned himself as the Mt Kenya kingpin, particularly after serving as Deputy President, Kindiki’s rising profile and his recent visibility in national politics have elevated his standing.
Leaders backing Kindiki argue that:
He has delivered on key national security reforms
He maintains strong relationships with youth and grassroots groups
On the other hand, Gachagua loyalists maintain that he is still the legitimate voice of the region, citing his seniority and political experience.
What It Means Ahead of 2027
The emerging division is expected to shape alliances and voting patterns as the country approaches the 2027 General Election. Political analysts warn that a fractured Mt Kenya could weaken the region’s bargaining power unless its leaders find common ground.
Religious leaders and community elders have urged both camps to tone down the rivalry and focus on development, not political supremacy battles.
Calls for Unity
Meanwhile, the debate continues to dominate conversations across the region as residents watch the unfolding power contest between Gachagua and Kindiki.
