Japan Tobacco International (JTI) on Wednesday reaffirmed its commitment to empowering local growers by hosting a special tour of its Kanengo factory in Lilongwe, giving farmers a firsthand look at how their tobacco is processed before export.
Speaking during the visit, JTI Corporate Affairs and Communications Director Limbani Kakhome said the factory tour was designed to celebrate the growers’ dedication to producing top-quality tobacco leaf and to deepen collaboration between the company and its supplier base.
> “This visit marks an important step in strengthening our relationship with growers. We want them to see the value their hard work brings to the entire production chain and appreciate the high standards their tobacco goes through before reaching international markets,” said kakhombe.
One of the participating growers, Amin Acid from Mangochi, described the tour as a “historic experience,” praising JTI for investing in transparency and inclusion.
> “We are grateful for this opportunity. Seeing how our tobacco is handled and prepared for the global market motivates us to maintain quality and ensure our leaf remains free of non-tobacco materials,” he said.
The tour is part of JTI’s ongoing engagement initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable tobacco production and fostering mutual growth between the company and Malawi’s farming communities.
