Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has launched a sharp attack against both President William Ruto and former President Uhuru Kenyatta, accusing the two leaders of “betraying the people of Mt Kenya” and misleading the region ahead of the 2022 elections.

Speaking during a community engagement event, Gachagua claimed that Mt Kenya residents were “blindly led” into backing Ruto, only to be sidelined in government after delivering decisive votes.
Claims of Marginalisation and Broken Promises
Gachagua argued that top positions and government benefits have gradually shifted away from Mt Kenya despite the region’s loyalty. He alleged that individuals from the community have been removed from key roles, and development priorities for the region have been ignored.
He further criticized the President’s approach to economic support, saying Mt Kenya farmers were being offered “tokens like beans and handouts” instead of meaningful agricultural support such as affordable fertilizer.
Blaming Uhuru for Not Warning the Region
In an unexpected twist, Gachagua also faulted former President Uhuru Kenyatta, saying the former Head of State failed to fully warn the region about Ruto’s “true character” before the 2022 polls.According to Gachagua, Mt Kenya leaders and residents were misled into rejecting Uhuru and embracing Ruto—only to face disappointment later.
Serious Allegations Against Ruto’s Leadership Style
The Deputy President made heavy allegations against Ruto’s leadership, suggesting that the administration is sliding into dangerous governance practices. He accused Ruto’s inner circle of endorsing extrajudicial measures and targeting youths, claims that have not been independently verified.
Gachagua said he personally refused to support such actions, insisting he will not be part of anything that harms young people in Mt Kenya.
Pledging to Defend Mt Kenya and Uhuru
He vowed to protect former President Uhuru Kenyatta from what he described as continuous attacks and humiliation by the Kenya Kwanza camp. Gachagua warned that he is ready to “respond in equal measure” to leaders who insult Mt Kenya leaders or the community’s interests.
A Battle for the Mt Kenya Political Throne
Political analysts see Gachagua’s remarks as part of a growing power struggle in Mt Kenya, with the Deputy President positioning himself as the region’s defender. His harsh tone signals deepening cracks within the Kenya Kwanza coalition and a possible shift in alliances as 2027 politics gather momentum.
What’s Next?
As tensions continue to rise, leaders aligned with both Ruto and Gachagua are expected to issue counter-statements in the coming days. Mt Kenya’s political future, once united under a common voting block, now appears increasingly divided.
