A major incident has been declared after a sudden collapse along a canal in Shropshire, England, triggered a large-scale emergency response and left several boats stranded.
Emergency services rushed to the scene after a section of the Shropshire Union Canal near Whitchurch gave way, causing water to rapidly drain from the canal. The collapse created a huge sinkhole, with dramatic scenes showing narrowboats left tilted, grounded, or partially submerged as the water disappeared.
Fire crews, police, ambulance services, and canal authorities are currently on site managing the situation. A safety cordon has been put in place, and members of the public have been urged to avoid the area due to unstable ground and ongoing risk of further collapse.
Officials confirmed that people living on boats close to the affected section were safely evacuated and taken to a nearby welfare centre. At this stage, no injuries or fatalities have been reported.
Images and videos circulating online reveal the scale of the damage, with a vast crater cutting through the canal bed and boats stranded where water once flowed freely. The incident has caused shock among local residents and boat owners.
The Canal & River Trust has begun urgent investigations to determine the cause of the collapse and assess the structural integrity of the canal. Engineers are working to stabilize the site, though authorities warn that repairs may take significant time.
