Tension continues to rise in Kakamega County as the Malava Constituency heads into a fiercely contested by-election. Senator Boni Khalwale has now alleged that there are plans by police to arrest him ahead of the poll, a move he claims is politically motivated to weaken his preferred candidate’s campaign machinery.
Speaking on Wednesday, Khalwale said he had already informed police about two different places he might spend the night, insisting that he is prepared for any attempt to “intimidate or silence” him. According to the outspoken senator, the threats emerged after he intensified campaigns in the region, where competition between leading candidates has reached fever pitch.
Khalwale accused unnamed state actors of targeting him because of his increasing influence in Malava politics.“I have notified the police about two possible locations where I will be sleeping tonight. Whatever they are planning, I am ready. These intimidation tactics will not work,” he stated.
The senator further called on security agencies to remain neutral and allow residents to vote freely without fear of coercion or political interference. Local leaders allied to him echoed the same sentiments, warning against any move that could heighten political temperatures in the region.
Meanwhile, police have not issued an official statement regarding Khalwale’s claims, although sources within the local administration insist that no arrest order has been issued.
The Malava by-election has drawn national attention, with political heavyweights trooping into the constituency to rally support for their candidates. As the campaigns enter the final stretch, all eyes remain on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and security agencies to ensure a peaceful and credible process.
